Introduction: what the Italian law says
Since 2020 in Italy the physical removal of the DPF (particulate filter) and the catalytic converter is prohibited on cars registered for road use. Penalties range from €430 to €1,730 + withdrawal of license in case of documented alteration. SOFTWARE removal (DPF off via mapping) is technically not expressly prohibited BUT the vehicle still does not comply with the homologation emissions, therefore it is punishable.
Conclusion: in Italy, DPF/EGR off is legal only for vehicles intended for competition/track (with documented declaration) or for export.
Why do customers ask for removal anyway
- Old cars (Euro 4-5) with clogged DPF: reconstruction costs €800-€1,500
- Dirtied EGR blocking the car: cleaning €200, replacement €600+
- Performance: less back pressure = more HP/torque
- Reliability: fewer components that break
Technique: software vs hardware
SOFTWARE removal (DPF off)
Change to ECU file that disables regenerations and ignores sensors. The physical filter remains mounted. Advantages: reversible, leaves no hardware traces. Disadvantages: the filter can become clogged and generate backpressure.
HARDWARE REMOVAL
Physical removal of the DPF (emptying) or replacement with a through exhaust. Advantages: Maximum performance. Disadvantages: visibly illegal, NOT reversible, the expert eye notices it during inspection.
EGR off
Almost always software only (edit map). Hardware only if the valve needs to be replaced and the customer wants to avoid buying it again.
How to manage the customer's request
Best practices to avoid risks:
- Signed disclaimer: the customer declares that the vehicle is intended for track/competition/export use. Legal document, don't ruin yourself for a few euros.
- Never work without customer identification: VAT number or tax code + license plate + driving license photo.
- Never promote publicly: no "DPF off €299" on the site or Facebook. Word of mouth/private communication only.
- Reject "suspicious" vehicles: commercial vans with company fleet, heavy vehicles, rental cars. The risk is not worth it.
Technical management
On your chiptuning management software:
- Dedicated service category "DPF Off (track use)" — not generic "DPF off"
- Disclaimer self-attached to the delivery PDF
- Customer history with all jobs (in case of control)
- ORI file always preserved (for restoration if needed)
What happens if the customer passes the review
The inspection test bench measures emissions. DPF off + virtual filter reset in software (virtual lambda, souped up sensors) can switch on first try. But:
- Expert auditors recognize mapped ECU (diagnostic tools report it)
- Surprise traffic police checks: if they notice changes, fine
- In the event of a serious accident: the insurance may refuse the accident due to an undeclared change
An alternative: the "sweet stage 1"
For the customer who wants more torque but doesn't want to risk it, pure Stage 1 (without DPF/EGR off) gives 70% of the performance benefit, is 100% legal, maintains the car warranty. Often the customer doesn't know: explain it to them. Margins for you: higher because less work time and zero risk.
Conclusion
Everyone makes their own choices regarding DPF/EGR off. Our recommendation: work clean, document everything, never promote, and know the customer well. For a professional setup, start from a serious chiptuning platform.
