What do Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3 mean
In the chiptuning world, "Stage" indicates the level of modification applied to a vehicle. The higher the stage, the more powerful the car, but also the more mechanical changes needed to support the extra power without breaking anything.
Stage 1: software only
Stage 1 is pure ECU remapping, without any mechanical modifications. The file is rewritten to optimize:
- Boost pressure (turbo)
- Ignition advance
- Fuel injection map
- Limiters and cut-offs
Average result: +25% power, +30% torque. On a 2.0 TDI 150hp → 190-200hp.
Cost: €250-€450 in Italy.
Suitable for: any car with a turbo engine, even with a warranty service if well done.
Stage 2: software + some changes
Stage 2 requires hardware changes to support power:
- Downpipe exhaust + decat (reduced back pressure)
- Sports or admission air filter
- Oversized intercooler (turbo petrol engines)
- EGR off / DPF off (technically illegal for road use on European diesels)
Average result: +35-45% power. On a 2.0 TDI 150hp → 220-230hp.
Cost: €600-€1,200 total (files + parts).
Suitable for: enthusiasts who want the best without touching the engine.
Stage 3: open engine
Stage 3 = serious changes:
- Boxed turbo (e.g. GTB2056VK on 2.0 TDI)
- More load-bearing injectors
- Additional fuel pump
- Reinforced clutch or reprogrammed DSG
- Possibly racing intercooler
Average result: +60-100% power. 2.0 TDI 150hp → 280hp+ with 600+ Nm torque.
Cost: €3,000-€8,000.
Suitable for: track, drag, drift, second fun cars. Not everyday life.
Comparative table
| Feature | Stage 1 | Stage 2 | Stage 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extra CV (medium) | +25% | +40% | +80% |
| Mechanical changes | No | Exhaust, filter, IC | Turbo, clutch, etc. |
| Work time | 1-2 hours | 1 day | 1-3 weeks |
| Reliability | High | Good | Low-medium |
| Car warranty | At risk | Lost | Lost |
What to offer your customers
For an average Italian chiptuner, 80% of the turnover comes from Stage 1. Stage 2 is 15%. Stage 3 5% (but with much higher margins). Don't specialize in just one: today's Stage 1 customer is tomorrow's Stage 3 customer.
Pricing for your customers
On your chiptuning portal set separate price lists for Stage 1/2/3. Separate prepaid credits for each service. Calculate ROI and decide on prices.
