The Bosch EDC17 family (Electronic Diesel Control gen. 17) is the most widespread diesel engine control system of the decade 2007-2018. Exists in dozens of variants (C04, C39, C46, C50, C54, C64, C66, C74, CP04, CP14, CP44, CP47, etc.) with Tricore TC1796/TC1797/TC1791 processor.
Vehicles equipped
- VAG: 1.6/2.0 TDI Common Rail (Audi, VW, Skoda, SEAT)
- BMW: all diesels N47, N57, B47, B57
- Mercedes: OM651, OM642
- FCA: 1.3/1.6/1.9/2.0 Multijet
- PSA: 1.6/2.0 HDi
- Hyundai/Kia: 1.6/2.0 CRDi
EDC17 Tuning
The EDC17 is the "daily bread" of the chiptuner. Each Stage 1 EDC17 file typically modifies: turbo pressure (boost), rail pressure, injection duration, SOI advance, required torque map. Modification range: +20-30% power, +30-40% torque.
Anti-tuning protections
The most recent EDC17 ECUs (post-2014) have TPROT8/9/10 protections that block writing via OBD. Solutions: Bench or Boot mode.
Typical maps and reliability
On EDC17 a Stage 1 file works in a coordinated manner on turbo pressure, rail pressure, duration and timing (SOI) of the injections and map of torque required, respecting the safety limits of the injectors, turbo and pump. The checksums must be recalculated and the DPF regeneration and SCR dosage logic must be preserved to avoid error codes and recovery entries.
Reading and protections
The older variants (TC1796/TC1797) are often readable in OBD; the most recent ones with TPROT8/9/10 require Bench or Boot. Before any writing, a backup of the original is mandatory: the enormous diffusion of the EDC17 has produced large databases of reference ORI files, but the file read by the customer's ECU always remains the preferable basis.
Why it is so widespread
The widespread diffusion of the EDC17 means, for a workshop, enormous libraries of ready-made solutions and an abundance of reference ORI files, but also the need to recognize the exact variant (C, CP, CV and related number) to choose the correct login method. Knowing the correspondence between variant, Tricore processor and type of protection is what distinguishes rapid and safe processing from a series of empty attempts.
