The DSG is the Volkswagen Group's dual clutch gearbox, mounted on VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT. There are 6-speed (DQ250, DQ500 wet) and 7-speed (DQ200 dry) variants. Technically identical to S-tronic Audi, M-DCT BMW, PDK Porsche, Powershift Ford.
DSG Tuning
When you remap a VAG car with DSG, you must also remap the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) to prevent the gearbox from limiting the engine output torque (downtorque protection). Typical TCU modifications:
- Increase in maximum supported torque
- Reduction of gear change times
- Modification of launch control logics
- Disabling rev-limiter in S/M mode
Specific DSG tools
DQ250 can be remapped via OBD with standard tools. DQ500 and DQ200 require Bench mode. The digital signature of recent TCUs complicates post-2018 tuning.
Why is it necessary to remap the TCU
The gearbox ECU applies torque protection (downtorque): if the engine ECU requests more torque than allowed, the gearbox cuts it to protect clutches and gears. By remapping only the engine, on a car with a dual clutch gearbox, the real increase is therefore limited until the TCU is also worked on.
Mechanical limits
The increase in permitted torque and the reduction in shift times accelerate the wear of the clutches: a DQ250, for example, has smaller margins than a DQ500. For this reason, TCU tuning must be calibrated based on the actual power level and use of the vehicle. The most recent TCUs, protected by digital signature, require reading in Bench and dedicated procedures.
Gearbox maintenance
Dual clutch gearboxes require changing the oil (and the filter, on oil bath versions) at the scheduled intervals, even more important after a remapping which increases torque. Slipping clutches, jerks at low speeds or harsh shifting indicate wear or the need for adaptation. Before aggressive tuning it is advisable to check the status of the gearbox: intervening on the software without considering the hardware accelerates the wear of the clutches.
