Flash

Also known as: FlashingReflashing

In short: The flash operation is writing a new firmware file to the ECU flash memory, replacing the existing one.

flashing is the operation of writing the new ECU file in the flash memory of the control unit. It is performed with professional tools (KESS3, Autotuner, Bflash) via OBD/Bench/Boot.

Typical times

  • OBD: 3-15 minutes
  • Bench: 5-25 minutes
  • Boot: 15-60 minutes

Safety procedures

  • Battery: connected to charge maintainer (a drop during flash = bricked ECU)
  • ORI Backup: always save before writing
  • Checksum: check that the MOD has correct checksum
  • Temperature: moderate environment, do not flash in extreme heat
  • Connections: stable, no movements

What to do if it goes bad

If the flash stops and the ECU becomes unresponsive, in Boot mode it usually recovers. If Boot also doesn't work, ECU replaced = €500-€2500.

OBD, Bench or Boot

Writing occurs with the same method used for reading: OBD when the ECU allows it, Bench on bench for ECUs with OBD blocked, Boot for those protected or to be recovered. The times increase when passing from OBD to Boot, as does the invasiveness of the intervention.

Error management

The interruption of a writing (voltage drop, unstable connection) is the main cause of a "bricked" ECU: for this reason a charge maintainer is used and movements are avoided during the process. In the event of a crash, recovery almost always goes through Boot, rewriting a healthy firmware. Without backup of the original and with Boot not available, all that remains is the replacement of the ECU, with the related costs and recoding.

Pre-flash checklist

Before writing, it is best to always follow the same list: charge maintainer connected, ORI backup saved, MOD checksums verified, moderate temperature environment and stable connections. This discipline minimizes the risk of bricking. In the event of an interruption, remain calm: you can often recover in Boot, but it is best not to attempt repeated blind rewrites before understanding the real state of the control unit.

In short, flashing is a routine operation if carried out methodically, but intolerant to unexpected events: voltage, backup and checksum are not optional. Treating each piece of writing with the same discipline is what keeps the risk of bricking away.
