The MAF (Mass Air Flow) is the sensor located in the intake manifold that measures the mass of air (kg/h) ingested by the engine. Together with the pressure and temperature, it allows the ECU to calculate the quantity of oxygen available and dose the fuel.
Types of MAF
- Hot wire: heated wire cools as the air passes, the attenuation measures the flow
- Film: HFM (Hot Film), more widespread, measures thermal-resistive
- Pressure/Temperature: some ECUs calculate the MAF indirectly from MAP + IAT

MAF and Tuning
Stage 1+ increases turbo pressure, so more air enters → MAF exceeds full scale. Solutions: recalibrate the MAF map in the firmware or replace with an increased MAF.
Role in metering
The measurement of the air mass allows the ECU to calculate the available oxygen and dose the fuel accordingly, as well as control EGR and anti-smoke strategies on diesels. An imprecise or dirty MAF distorts this calculation, producing smoke, loss of power and incorrect adaptations.
MAF and remapping
Increasing the turbo pressure increases the air flow: on some engines the MAF can approach or exceed the full scale, making it necessary to recalibrate the relevant map in the firmware or adopt a sensor with adequate flow. The "blind" removal of the MAF must be avoided: where the strategy requires it, the ECU can fall back on the calculation from MAP and temperature, but approximate management worsens driveability and emissions.
