The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is the "tax code" of a vehicle. 17 alphanumeric characters (excluding I, O, Q) standardized ISO 3779 since 1981.
VIN decoding
- Characters 1-3 (WMI): manufacturer + country

VIN in chiptuning
The VIN is stored in the EEPROM of the ECU and in other modules (cluster, gateway, BCM). When cloning/replacing an ECU, the VIN must be rewritten. Chiptuning portals require the VIN to automatically identify the vehicle from the database.
