Bench Mode is an ECU reading/writing technique intermediate between OBD and Boot Mode. The ECU is physically removed from the car and connected to the tool with quick-connect cables — no soldering, no OBD.
When to use it
- When the OBD is blocked (Bosch TPROT9-10 encryption)
- For complete backup before interventions on rare ECUs
- When the CAN module is writing during delicate operations
Advantages vs Boot
Faster and less invasive than Boot Mode. Does not require opening the ECU or soldering. But some modern ECUs (e.g. Bosch MD1) are only readable in Boot.

KESS3, Autotuner, MagicMotorsport Flex, AlienTech KESS3 Master. Each has a set of specific Bench cables that can be purchased separately.
Connection and pinout
In Bench the control unit, removed from the car, is powered externally by the tool and connected with a quick-connect connector that replicates the communication pins. You don't open the seals or solder anything, unlike the Boot. It is essential to respect the correct pinout of the ECU family: an incorrect connection can damage the microcontroller.
When to prefer it
The Bench is the most used route when the OBD is blocked by encryption (TPROT9-10) but the ECU does not require direct access to the processor. It allows complete reading and writing of flash and EEPROM in a short time, with much lower risk than Boot. However, some recent ECUs (e.g. Bosch MD1/MG1) remain accessible only in Boot, so it is advisable to check the coverage of the tool before the intervention.
Errors to avoid
In Bench the most common errors are the inversion of the power supply and the use of wiring that is not specific for that ECU: both can damage the ECU irreversibly. It is always advisable to check the official pinout diagram of the tool, power the correct voltage and keep the connections stable for the entire duration of reading and writing, exactly as is done with a charge maintainer when working in OBD on the car.
