File Service

Also known as: File Service TuningSlave service

In short: An ECU file service that produces modified files from the original sent by the customer, paying per file or via prepaid credits.

A file service is the dominant business model of B2B chiptuning. Workshops send original ECU files to a central provider who produces the modified file and sends it back.

Operating model

  1. The workshop extracts the ORI file with KESS3/Autotuner/Bflash
  2. Uploads it to the file service portal
  3. Chooses the type of tuning (Stage 1, DPF off, etc.)
  4. Pays (card or credits prepaid)
  5. Receive the MOD ready in 5 min - 24h
  6. Flash the MOD on the end customer's ECU

Typical pricing

  • Stage 1 Auto: €30-€80 per file
  • DPF/EGR Off: €40-€100
  • Stage 2: €60-€150
  • Commercial vehicles/trucks: €150-€400

Advantages of the model

For the workshop: scalability (50 files/day with the same effort), endless ECU coverage, saving €5,000+ in WinOLS licenses, technical skills only necessary for flash. See complete guide file service portal.

Time and quality of service

The competitiveness of a file service is measured on delivery times (from 5 minutes for automatic tuning to 24 hours for custom requests), vehicle coverage and map quality. The best providers combine libraries of ready-made solutions with the possibility of tailor-made processing for control units or particular requests.

Automation and portal

The value of the model lies in the automation: service catalogue, credit system, payments, invoicing and integrated vehicle database reduce manual work for each order. For the workshop this means scaling the number of files managed without proportionally increasing the time dedicated, maintaining internally only the expertise necessary to read and write the control unit.

Is it really worth it?

For the workshop, the file service breaks down entry barriers: no WinOLS licenses costing thousands of euros or years of experience in map development, but only the expertise to read and write the control unit. The downside is the dependence on the quality and times of the provider: for this reason it is better to choose a partner with good coverage, reactive support and the possibility of custom work when the ready solution is not enough.
