When it makes sense
Stage 2 is the logical step when you want to overcome the limits of Stage 1 while maintaining road use: by freeing the exhaust (downpipe/decat) and improving the intake, the engine breathes better and the map can push further safely. On turbo petrol engines, a larger intercooler stabilizes air temperatures, avoiding a drop in performance in the most intense sessions.
Coordinated software and legality
The map must always be adapted to the hardware installed: a Stage 1 calibration on an open exhaust does not exploit the potential and can be inconsistent. Pay attention to the legal aspects: on a European diesel, Stage 2 with decat, EGR off or DPF off is not homologable for road use. It is best to plan the intervention in its entirety (rows + components + assembly) and include a bench test to validate the result.

Stage 2 is at its best when rows and components are chosen together: exhaust, intake and possible intercooler define the potential that the map can exploit. Approaching it piecemeal, with a calibration not aligned to the hardware, leads to inconsistent results.
